DIAMOND GROVE CEMETERYOver a century of history unfolds throughout the winding lanes of Diamond Grove, one of Illinois’ oldest cemeteries. Several generations of families from every walk of life can be found within these gates, beginning with the burial site of Isaac Fort Roe, one of the first settlers in Morgan County. His headstone, erected in 1869, today stands as a silent tribute to the concerned attention, surveillance and upkeep that has been maintained throughout the long history of Diamond Grove.
Many other well-known Illinois residents are buried in this cemetery, including three former Governors of the State of Illinois - Richard Yates, Joseph Duncan and Richard Yates, Jr.
Stately trees remain abundant on the naturally landscaped grounds. Well- tended lawns and shrubbery add to the serene beauty in any season.
JACKSONVILLE EAST CEMETERY:Jacksonville East Cemetery was purchased in 1833, and today covers over 30 acres of grassy, tree-shaded areas in the northeast corner of the City. Jacksonville East is a pleasing harmony of yesterday and today.
Several congressmen are buried at Jacksonville East, as well as the enigmatic William Churchill Posey, whom some historians believe was a direct descendant of George Washington. Dr. Alonzo Kenniebrew, the black physician who organized and operated the famous New Home Sanitarium in Jacksonville in the early 1900's, also rests here. Ken Norton, local Boxing Champion, and General Grierson, Civil War General, are also buried here.
